HAWERA MALE CHOIR.

4 ™ CONCERT AT MANAIA. The twenty-ninth concert of the choir was given at Manaia Town Hall last evening. The choir, nnder Mr. H. Aekroyd, was in great form, the most notable feature being the great improvement in quality of tone. The best numbers rendered were "The Lit- • tie Admiral" (Chas. V. Stanford), "King Olaf's Christmas" (Dudley Buck), and "Sailing at Dawn" (Chas. ■V. Stanford). Mr. A. B. Macdonald, the winner of the bass solo at the last j Wellington competitions, delighted the audience. He sang "The Late Player" j (Allerton), "We Sway Away" (Allerton), "King Charles" (White), and | "The Stoker." His encore numbers j were also very much appreciated. His voice of rich quality is a treat to hear. I The Melody Four (male quartette win- ' ners at Wellington competitions, 1922) is a very fine combination indeed. They were successful in the production of "In Absence" (Dudley Buck) and "Annie Laurie" (Molloy). They were recalled several times, and responded by giving the amusing items "The Water Melon" and "The Tack." Mr. Harold Aekroyd sang with great effect the in memoriam solo "Thou'rt Passing Hence." Mrs. Grace accompanied the choir and the soloists in her usual artistic manner. Altogether the concert was a great success. The same programme will be given by the choir in the Grand Theatre this evening.

========== | Large crowds attended the Salvation A rmy Empire Fair yesterday afternoon and evening. Mr. J. R. Corrigan spoke on the good work of the Army throughout the world and, amidst much applause, declared the Fair opened. At night Councillor Townsend presided, and also spoke encouragingly of the social work and other branches of the Salvation Army. To-night a splendid programme has been arranged, and a big crowd is expected.
