GENERAL ELECTION.

I MR. DIXON'S CANDIDATURE. A public meeting convened for the purpose of furthering the candidature of Mr. E. Dixon, M.P., irrespective of j his political party allegiance, was held at the Islington 'lea Rooms on Wednesday night. The convener (Mr. E. C. Hayton) was voted to the chair, and Mr. E. Evans was elected secretary, i ! The chairman said he was well satisfied with the attendance, and was encouraged by the amount of support his action had already received from per' sons representing all sections--of the community who could not attend a public meeting. They had met to discuss the desirability of forming a non-party or inter-party organisation to secure electoral support for Mr. Dixon, on' the twofold ground of his outstanding' personal worth and his proved capacity; i and zeal in promoting the vital inter-' | ests of the town and district. The generally recoginsed difficulty of draw- ! ing a clear line of distinction between the Reform and Liberal parties at the I present time cleared the way far the j proposed non-party local organisation, 1 and the important public services rendered by Mr. Dixon while on the Education Board, as Mayor of Hawera, and as M.P. for a short period, together with his pronounced convictions on all moral issues, entitled him to special ' and practical recognition by the electors of Patea at the forthcoming poll. Mr. Dixon was a candidate for whom they could work enthusiastically. j One member of the meeting welcomed the opportunity afforded by the proposed organisation of emphasising the necessity of electing to Parliament men of high moral character and proved worth. I After further discussion it was re- : solved to form an organisation which, while co-operating with the Reform Party, would maintain an independent '' non-party character. The members oi the new organisation undertook to work along the lines indicated and report tc a later meeting.
