SEASIDE SOCIETY. The annual meeting of members of the Opunake Seaside Society was held on Wednesday, Mr. T. S. Hickey (president) presiding over an attendance of seven members. The balance-sheet, which was adopted without discussion, showed that receipts had exactly met expenditure. Complimentary reference was made to j the work of the secretary (Mr. C. 0. j Edmonds) during an arduous year, and j a vote of £5 as a small recognition of j his services was carried unanimously. The following additions to the rules were unanimously adopted:— (1) That all members holding shack sites who fail to pay rent for-.sa.me before 30th September in each year be compelled/to forfeit site and to remove buildings erected thereon; also that site-holders be given security of tenure by the issue of a five years' lease at the present yearly rental of £1 Is. The matter of compensation for buildings in the .case of resumption of sites by the society shall be settled by arbitration. (2) That for the future no member shall be allotted'more than one - shack site on the society's land, and lessees must build within twelve months from date of allotment, or in default to forfeit site. (3) That only members financial at 30th September in each year shall be allowed to vote on any question at future meetings of the society. It was resolved that a canvass be made for new members and that the list be published. It was also decided that fete days be held on Boxing Day and New Year's Day. . It was resolved that the rental for rooms in the pavilion during the months of December, January, February and March be as follows; .Suite of three rooms, £2 10s per week, or 9s per day;.single rooms, £1 per week, or 4s per day. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to the ladies who had again assisted the society during the year; also to the president, secretary and the Federal Band It was resolved to suppress the practice of several • visitors to the beach in speeding over the sands per motor car and cycle to the danger of children and others. Notice boards are being .erected, and for the future the speed limit is fixed at 4 miles per hour for vehicles on the beach. , The president reported that a committee previously appointed had mnde financial arrangements for the erection of an up-to-date ladies' bathing shed; also for .improved lavatories. A-con-tract for the erection of these had been "let to Mr. Hammond the price being £279. - * >r" 1 " SCOUTS' ASSOCIATION. A meeting of those interested in the formation of a Boy Scouts' and Girl Guides' local association was held on Friday evening. The Rev. Mr. Sinister, scoutmaster, explained the objects of the association. Six months ago there were nine Boy Scouts. Since then rapid enrolments had taken place, and now the number was 57 Boy Scouts and 25 Girl Guides. Up to the present the local movement had been carried on i under the New Plymouth Association, j which now advised that, owing to the j large local enrolments, that an associai tion be formed at Opunake. j Officers were appointed as follows : — j Commissioner, Dr. T. It was decided to hold a meeting on the 23rd inst., when it is expected that Commissioner Gray, of the New Plymouth Association" will be in attendance to make a. full explanation of the duties and aims of the association. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to the Rev. Simister and Mrs. Simister for the zeal they had shown and their successful work in connection with the Boy Scout and Girl Guide movement in this district. ROAD RACE. Considerable interest was manifested locally in the round the mountain cycle road race, which took place on Saturday. The country people were represented fairly well in the large crowd who. were watching the competitors pass through the town. The first to arrive here was H. S. Herbert, of lnaha, at 11.45 a.m., shortly to be followed by D. Fitzherbert (Inglewood). The balance of the competitors to reach here came at'short intervals,-some in groups of four and five at 12.10 p.m. Coulter and Sutton, the limit men, passed through apparently taking things leisurely. In all 42 competitors reached here. TELEPHONE EXCHANGE. Several additional connections have recently been made to the local telephone exchange, and the required number of subscribers have now been secured to enable this to be an 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. exchange. This will take effect m the installation, of a new switchboard being effected, and wiil prove a great boon to subscribers.
