ABOUT THE ENGLISHMEN.
Mr. L. T. J. Henderson writes from Bondi: — Colonel J. C. Hartley, one of the old brigade,, has played for Oxford and Siussex, having been the mainstay of Oxford's bowling in 1896 and 1897. He went to South Africa with P. F. Warner in 1905, and last year was chosen captain of the team which was to have visited New Zealand. Colonel Hartley was a brilliant slip-man and a good bowler* and this year is playing nearly, as welß.as ever. J ; B\ McLean, of Worcester, the wicket-keeper of the team, made his debut in county cricket only'in^May of this year, taking Ponsonby's place. He has, as understudy, T. C. Lowry, of Cambridge and Somerset, a New Zealander by birth. He is an unortho-.' dox batsman, a powerful hitter, and j drives and hooks with delightful freedom. He is more useful as wicketkeeper than as bowler. He stands well up to the wicket. Last year he scored 183 in the University Freshmen's match, it being the biggest made for 20 years in the games. j
