NOXIOUS WEEDS.

SOMEWHAT ALARMING SPREAD

At the last meeting of the Patea County Council Cr. Watkins brought up the question of increase in the spread of Cape daisy in the county. He said -Ehere was a lot growing in the railway paddock at Waverley, and in parts of Patea town, and unless this had attention it was impossible to keep the county clean. He said it was a terriblei thing io get rid of when once in a district. He_ thought the question was no? taken seriously enough. Patea were the first to make the daisy a noxious weed. Waverley had. done the same, but not th© Patea Borough. Cr. Taylor said there was a great deal too much of these noxious weeds. Ragwort was spreading all over his district, and although the plants did not go to seed they were coming quite thickly, so thai seed must come on th© wind from the surrounding district. a

The chairman said that round Manutahi and near the Manawapou River there was plenty. The surfacemen should go over all roads and grub it out. It was not nearly so prevalent in the bush. Cr z Taylor said that Califomian thistle was also spreading wherever cultivation was being done. He consiaere'd that notice should be sent to the inspectors of noxious weeds. The chairman said that the experience of the .farcea River at high flood showed that a lot of seed came down from the high country. Cr. Belto-n said there was so much in some parts it had been said that one did not know where to start. Cr. Watkins said that the Cape daisy, even if grubbed hard, was never satisfactorily dealt with. He consider- I ed they should "shake up" the railway authorities. On his motion it was decided to call their attention, and also that of the Patea Borough Council and Waverley Town Board, to the prevalence of the weed, and to ask their co-operation in | checking its spread
