A GOOD RAINFALL. j
The '■ Government Meteorologist's forecast yesterday for unsettled conditions was very accurate, and during the afternoon the northeast / wind brought down heavily laden clouds. Rain began to fall early in the evening, and the wind rose to gale force, culminating late in the night in a brilliant flash of lightning and a great peal of thunder. Rain fell in torrents at intervals, and the ground/ received a much-needed soaking. The \ Postmaster reports that from 9 a.m. yesterday to 9 a.m. to-day 1.34 inches of rain fell. The barometer is not as low as might have been expected, but with the chance in the wind to the northwest
the mercury shows a rising tendency, and a return of fine, warm days may be looked for soon^ On inquiry at the telegraph office this morning a reporter was informed that no damage had been done ix> the post office lines in this district, but the Hawera County Electric Company report that four transformers at various points in their district hare been struck by lightning, but were soon repaired by the staff. . : The county engineer, Mr. Muggeridge, states "that no news of any damage having occurred in the Uawera county has been received.
