WAIMATE WEST COUNTY COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING.

The usual monthly meeting of the Waimate West Counis~. Council was held in the Council Chambers at Manaia yesterday. There were present: Messrs ,T. McPhillips (chairman), Long, Stevenson and McKay. Leave of absence was granted Crs, Le Fleming and Gamlin. SIR ARTHUR PEARSON FUND.

The matter of the request for a donation by the Council to the Sir Arthur Pearson Memorial Fund for the civilian blind was before the Council. The chairman pointed out that there was a certain amount of rates which the Council could not ' gep' in ? and also thete was the matter of the Council's antecedent liability. He thought that the Council's financial position was not good enough to enable them to accede to the request. Cr Long pointed out that there were private contributions to the fund in the county, and he thought that such 'a fund should be supported by every individual in the Dominion.

Cr Stevenson said that it was a very deserving ease that had come before the Council, but there were so many deserving cases) and the Council wasnot in a good financial position, and so he did not see how a donation could reasonably be given. It was decided to hold the matter over. •■■ - KAUPOKONUI BRIDGE.

Messrs Toogoqd\;aiid Jones wrote acknowledging 'amended ; instructions and stating tha^ tlfey , were going ahead at orieej witfr^fchedesign as now decided on. They were sorry for the delay, but it was due in part to; their effort to make an arch span type of bridge to fit the •conditions. Now, however, the job was straightforward, and they could get it off without delay. KAUPOKONUI BEACH.

The chairman reported;that, together with Crs Long and McKay and members of the Tradesmen's Association, he had visited the road leading to the Kaupokonui beach, the opening pi which road had been discussed at the last meeting of the Council. He thought that the deputation could see that.it was not, much "use opening up the road (as it ied out on to a bluff) unless arrangements could be made with Mr Gamlin to use part of his land.

Councillors thought that Mr Gamlin had been treating the public very generously in allowing them to make use of his land. It would be a pity to force Mr Gamlin to open a road when he had been making such concessions. If Mr Gainlin's uand were forced it was quite within his power to refuse patrons of the beach the right to use t his property. That would be awkward, as the road alone would not be of much use to the public.

The chairman said that it would cost about £100 to fence the road.

No motion was passed by the Council as it was considered that the matter was one between the Association and Mr Gamlin. "

NATIVE RATES. The chairman mentioned the matter of obtaining liens on native lands ferrates had been gone on with, and was now in order. , ELECTRIC POWER.

An informal discussion arose over Mr Toogbod's proposal that councillors meet Mm when he is in the district and discuss the.matter.of electric power for, the Waimate County. It was alleged that the Kaponga Power Board had erected poles in the Waimate County without permission. The chairman said that the Council should not want to act in "the/fog in the manger" manner^ but he thought permission should have been obtained. Councillors considered that the Waimate County was in. a very isolated position as far as obtaining electric power was concerned.
