' Recently some difference of opinion has been expressed through the columns of the Auckland Star as to whether it 'is customary in all the States in Australia for gentlemen to remove their hats while in an elevator if ladies are present. A former New Zealander, who has been for some years in Australia, and has been having a holiday in New Zealand, was written to and asked his opinion on the subject, and sent the^ following reply just before he sailed, by ; the Moeraki: ''It is usual and customary in all the States of Australia and Tasmania for gentlemen to remove th&ir hats in elevators when ladies are present. My travels include all principal towns from Cairns in North Queensland, to Perth in Western, Australia, and Hobart in Tasmania. I've been four times right 1 through during the last eighteen months, and let me give you a brief example from Victoria. I was staying at the Commercial Travellers' Club in Melbourne, and while descending from the sixth floor, with five other travellers, we stopped at the fourth floor, when a girl, who was pbvjously a housemaid, entered, the lift. Instantly every man removed his h*t. In all the States of Australia quite a, number ,of women work the Efts, and if you are waiting on the ground floor to ascend, whether the male passengers are one or more, with no ladies except the lift attendant present, you will invariably see, when they arrive at the bottom floor, that they have their ■ hats in their hands. It has become a recognised custom right through all the States." "CURED MY PILES IN ONE - WEEK."
