PARTIAL FAILURE OF CROPS

Representatives of the voluntary wheat pool conferred with the Minister of Agriculture on the basis of the guarantee to be given by the pool in connection with the rent for silos. In view of the danger of the, > partial failure of the crop, representatives objected to the condition imposed by the State that they should guarantee a rent of l|d per bushel on 8,000,000 bushels without respect to the amount of wheat actually placed in the silos. It was pointed out that the crop possibly would not*'amount to more than 13,000,000 bushels, in which case the pool would have to pay rent on about 60' per cent of the total crop, while there was no prospect of anything like that proportion being put in the silos. The representatives submitted ' alternative proposals,' which will be- submitted to Cabinet-
• Mr. Bruzner, leader of the Progressive Party, stated the wheat crop would be a complete failure over most of the north-west.. Already farmers were advertising offering their wheat crops to be eaten off by stock. Even if rain came on now it would be too late.
