KIFLxi SHOOTING.

HAWEftA CLUB. On Saturday at Whareroa the Kaponga Rifle Club endeavoured to win from the Hawera Rifle Club"the Taranaki Challenge Shield, but were unsuccessful by a margin of 16 points. On the whole the scoring was not very brilliant, but this could be accounted for by the hard conditions. The light at both the 300 yards and 600 yards was very trying. Rfmn. Roots and Cross, of the Hawera Club, were top for the day with a score of 94 each, I the highest scores in the Kaponga team being registered by Rfmn. G. Smith and A. Zimmerman, with 91 each. The conditions of the match were eight men a side, seven shots and an optional j sighter at each range, 300 yards, 500 yards, and 600 yards. The scores were as follows: —

707 The Taranaki Challenge Shield was wrested from the Kaponga Kille Club on October 29 last. Since that date the local club has successfully withstood challenges from Patea Rifle Club, who were defeated by 43 points; New Plymouth Rifle Club, who were defeated i by the narrow margin of one point, and • on Saturday last by Kaponga Club, who ' were defeated by 16 points. The New j Plymouth Club, inspired by the good fight they had put up last time, intend to come down, again on Saturday week. The local club will need to shoot up to their best form to retain the shield next time. However, the writer thinks it would do a great deal of good if the shield did go north, as it would be the means of giving fresh life to rifle shooting in North Taranaki, where nothing is* heard of it these days. There are clubs at Waitara, lnglewood, and Tahora, but no accounts of their shoots ever appear in print. BENNETT AND SUTTON CUP. Cross, the winner of the Bennett and Sutton Cup, is to be congratulated on his well deserved win. He has shot consistently throughout the season, and the aggregate made by him shows him to be one of the first rate shots of the club. In the Bennett and Sutton series his score off the rifle was 275 and equal to Rfmn. Ritchie, the club champion, and one point ahead of Rfmn.. Roots, the Dominion champion. Rfmn. Cross is apparently at the top of his form, and, with the Patea meeting in sight, he should earn further laurels there. !
