THE SHOOTING SEASON.

OPENS ON MONDAY NEXT

Prospects for the season which opens on. Monday are of the brightest, and reports all over the district are most promising, and snow that sportsmen should have an excellent time this season. Many birds have been reared at the hatcheries and liberated when matured! so that there should be no lack of sport I all over the district. Quail are reported to be very plentiful and in good condition. The council of the Acclimatisation Society issue a warning that shooting before the opening, if detected, will be severely dealt with, a penalty of £10 being enforceable. According to the new regulation, every license i holder has the powers of a ranger, while all police are rangers. As there are many others acting voluntarily, any of these can demand the production of license by anyone shoting in this district, and the onus is thrown on to the individual to prove that he is a license holder. By these means it is hoped to check, or at least curb shooting out of season, and so protect the interests of the legitimate sportsmen.
