VARIOUS CHANGES

No. 8 Regimental District, which is mder the command of Captain Bremier, has been subdivided into two reas —northern and southern. The wrthern is known as No. Ba, and is mder Lieut. Andrew, V.C., who is also djutant to the fourth battalion (TaraiaKi Rifles), and the southern is known ls No. Bb, and is commanded by Lieut. Steele, who is also adjutant to the Second Mounted Rifles Regiment. Sergeants-Major Sharp and Stevens lave been transferred to the 8a area it New Plymouth, where they will rejlace two "sergeants-major who have seen retrenched. Colonel C. W. Melvill, who comnazids the Central Military Command, ,vili present the North Island Weekly Press Challenge Shield to the New Plymouth Technical School Cadets to-mor-row. Last year No. 8 Regimental District [Taranaki) met with many successes. Sergeant H. S. Chadwick won the Win. Robert Friar Memorial Prize for the best all-round cadet in the Central Military Commandj Private, P. W. Maleolmsoii, of New Plymouth, won* the championship belt for the command rifle meeting; the New Plymouth xechnical School won the Weekly Press North Island Challenge Shield, New Plymouth Boys' Higk School being placed second; and th% New Plymouth Boys' High School obtained the highest score for New Zealand in the Imperial Challenge Shield Competition and received special commendation from the National Rifle Association and the Governor-General. The averages for the annual musketry course for secondary schools for the year just ended are also exceptionally good, Taranaki showing up well. They are as follow: No. 5 Regimental District (Wellington), 71.1; No. 6 Regimental District (Palmerston N.), 69.1; No. 7 Regimental District (Napier), 71.8; No. 8 Regimental District (Taranaki), 76.7. The Taranaki results for shooting, | especially whei> a Hawera man (Rifleman D. Roots) won the New Zealand Championship Belt, shows that Taranaki is capable of producing some excellent shots. It is to be hoped that those cadets and territorials who have done so well during the" past year will continue their shooting as members of the various rifle clubs when they have completed their military obligations. Territorials of the age of 21 may be transferred to the reserve, provided they h.SY? h?d four years' efficient service", two of" wiiieh have been served with the Territorials. The exchanging of a Defence section immediately behind the postmaster's residence for a section behind the water tower belonging to the Justice Department has provided the Justice t Department with a section they require for a site for the proposed new police station.
