N.Z. LADIES IN AUSTRALIA,

BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYHTOHT SYDNEY, April 27. The tennis tournament was continued to-day in fine weather. The courts were in excellent condition, despite early-morning rain. The play of the New Zealanders showed a further improvement, Aliss Curtis making better use of the drier courts.

Miss Payton (New Zealand) beat Miss endall, 5 —7, 6—4, 10—8. This was a fairly even match. Miss Payton led s—l5 —1 in the last game, which seesawed to the end, the New Zealander winning by superior placing. Miss Mountain beat Miss Wellwood (New Zealand), G— ?,, G—4. This was a vigorous game. The former played with greater precision.

Miss Curtis (New Zealand) beat Mrs Lister, 6—3, 4—6, 6—4. A feature of Miss Curtis' play was excellent volleying and keeping an accurate length. Miss Boyd beat Miss Macfarlane (New Zealand), 6—3, 10—12, 6—l. The New Zealander emerged from her shell in the second set, displaying brilliant form, especially in driving. In the doubles, Mrs Lister and Miss Boyd beat Miss Payton and Miss Wellwood, 6 —l, 6— i. Thew inners were the superior pair, their accuracy in volleying being the chief factor in their victory.

Miss Curtis and Miss Macfarlane beat Miss Mountain and Miss Kendall, 6—l, 2—6, 6—2. The New Zealanders dovetailed excellently, Miss Curtis showing keen discrimination in measuring her shots. The improved condition of tne coutrs enabled her to make use of pace, while her overhead work was good. Miss Maefarlaue was always on the "go," and effectively employed a useful backhand stroke.

The New Zealanders play again on Monday.
