i A statement that it was proposed to reduce the price of passages between the Dominion and the Old Country was referred by the Auckland Star to a tourist representative, who in the course of his work deals with hundreds of applicants for passages during the year, and it was at once denied. He said he could offer no reason for the rumour, as the shipping companies had not made the slightest intimation that such was their intention. The rumour stated that a reduction would be made to £26 . for a return passage to England in con. ! nection with the Empire Exhibition. "Under existing circumstances it would be quite impossible to take passengers at such a rate," he said. "It would not pay the companies to do so. I bei lieve that it might have been possible !to do that at one time, but it is quite ! out of the question nowadays." An amusing scene was witnessed in the Auckland Magistrate's Court when a husband and wife persisted in addressing the Bench together to explain |on one side that a maintenance order i had not been complied with, and on the husband's part why an adjournment ought to be granted (reports the Star). As Mr. R. Matthews was standing patiently waiting all the time. Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., at last got a chance to ask: "Are you appearing for either party?'' Mr. Matthews replied: "I don't seem to be, but I was retained by the wife." The dialogue here broke out again, and continued until Mr. McKean said to the husband: "You pay £2 into court and I will grant the adjournment,'' which was agreed to.
