ELTHAM.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

COMBINED BANDS QUEEN CARNIVAL.

The town on Saturday was full of excitement over the Queen carnival, and in the afternoon all committees were busy. The juvenile committee held a concert and took up collections, while the others held afternoon teas, sale of work, and other attractions. In the evening the pate was "go as you please/ but it was made hot, as the \ final results were by no means antici- | pated accurately, although it was evident that the Juvenile and Loyal Queens were well in the running and ' I both were right out to win. Even after ' the secretaries had made their payments '| to the general secretary sums of a few '' shillings were still passed through the 1 door. The Juvenile candidate must have received upwards of £5 in the ■ last five minutes. Both the Loyal and 1, the Motor concert parties were out in the evening, as also was the Highland ' Pipe Band, and the three parities kept the town going with merriment; in i fact, during part of the evening the noise and musio almost rivalled txie hilarity of peace night. Soon after 8 o'clock a great crowd was in town, and . at 8.45 there was a big crowd in front i of Messrs Tristram and Co.'s office, ; j where the final' payments were to be i i received. Sharp at 9 o'clock the sec- ; j retary closed the door and proceeded 5 with the counting of the money. In - the meantime the two concert parties , and the Pipe Band kept up a contmu- - ous programme outside and a good- - humoured crowd appreciated the music. ?' At 9.45 o'clock the chairman (Mr. "W. S. 3. Heyes} announced the results. He first i announced that the total amount col--jlected was £741 Is 3d, which was rea ceived with hearty applause. He then 9 ■ declared the amounts received by each I ■ candidate as follows: Juvenile Quten - (Miss O. Marchant), £289 Is s£d; Loyal »: Queen (Miss D. Tayler), £267 4s Bid; • i Mountain Queen (Miss C. White), £101 >, 8s 6d; Motor Queen (Miss W. Henrick~j son), £83 7s. The relative values of .: the votes at twopence per vote were: i Juvenile Queen, 34,688; Loyal Queen, j 32,065; Mountain Queen, 12,171; I 1 Motor Queen, 10,002. The bands will I thus receive a handsome sum to augv . ment their accounts, the amount being t ! far in excess of expectations. At first | it was thought that £400 would be all 1 that could be expected, but a little rivalry and keenness added the rest. The executive will meet during the i week and decide on what date the coronation will take place and in what form. No doubt the executive will en- , deavour to obtain the combined talent t . of the various concert parties, and if successful the combination should be ; j well worth hearing. . > # After the results were known, ,the little queen, who was at the pictures, was parried shoulder high through the r \ town, and with her party received con(i gratulations on every side, 'fhe sum - of £289 Is 5d for one committee is deserving of comment. It was only ! through hard work and organisation | that this amount was obtained, and the committee is to be heartily congratui lated on its labours. The runners-up I also put in a lot of hard work and | many late nights. The difference of :" £21 17s 2d is not great in a contest I of this sort, as one more effort on their part would no doubt have landed them I very near the winners. The secretary • (Mr. J. Stewart) handed to the general ! secretary no less a sum than £226 3s 3d | just on the call of time on Saturday evening. The committee is also well I deserving of .thanks and congratulaI tions.
