The Prime Minuter (Mr. Massey) arrived at Auckland by the Main Trunk express yesterday. , A cable message from Funchal states that ex-Emperor Karl is suffering from fever, and that the doctors are holding i a Consultation on the case. . The Dunetfin City Council received 28 applications for the position of tramway engineer, and appointed Mr. C. W. Payne, of Auckland, on. six months' trial.

The death has occurred at Hamilton of a well-known and highly-esteemed resident, in the person of Mr. Reginald Drake, at the ace o f fifty-four years.

A telegram from Wellington records the death of Mr. William Mowat Hannay,, ex-general manager of the Well-ington-Manawatu Eailway Company. He was a director of several Wellington coornpanies.

The death occurred at the Wellington hospital late on Thursday night of Mr. Norman James Leslie, a resident of Wellington for over thirty years, and a brother of Mr. T. W. Leslie, custodian of the Town Hall. As a young man the late Mr. Leslie took a very keen interest in rifle shooting, and as sergeant in the old Wellington Guards he led one of the best company teams of riffe shots that the province has known, and himself won the Government gold star as the best shot in the North Island. The deceased, who was 58 years of age, leaves three daughters and two sons. His eldest son, Mr. Norman Leslie, was killed at Gallipoli.

Dr. C. R. Burns, who recently passed the final medical examinations in Dunedin, has been awarded the Medical Travelling Scholarship for 1922 and the Batchelor Memorial Medal for gynecology. Dr. Burns received his primary education at St. Mary's School, Blenheim, and, after gaining a board scholarship, continued his studies at Marlborough College, and later at Nelson College. Dr. Burns has been appointed assistant to Dr. Drennan, Professor of Pathology at the Otago University.

Mr, 0. E. Burton, of Papatoetoe, lias been appointed by the New Zealand Alliance as special organiser in connection with work among young people, the churches, and generally to organise for the Prohibition Party in view of the poll to be held this year. Mr. Burton, who is a returned soldier, holding a double decoration, is the author of "The Official History of the Auckland Regiment" and other works. Mr. Burton has been engaged for some time in connection with V.M.C.A. work in AVellington.
