THE BEEF MARKET.

PRESENT DEPLORABLE CONDITION.

CAUSES DISCUSSED

3T CABLE—PBES3 ASSOCIATION—COPYEIGHT Received March 25, 9.50 a.ni LONDON, March 24. In an interview with the Australian Press, Mr. Elder says that the prin•cipal causes of the present deplorable position of the beef market is the war of prices- between Argentine exporters anil ■the flooding of the market with ■^Argentine meat. Until quite recently the Argentine shippers' losses had been colossal. If the present reported endeavours to arirve at an agreement are 45uccessful shipment will be considerably decreased immediately, and prices will rise. The removal of Ye sty's 125,000 quarters would relieve the niarket, but €2&-effec? would be only temporary. If shipowners reduced the freight by a farthing per pound and the Australian Government gave a farthing bonus it would undoubtedly greatly help the producers, but bonuses and subsidies aiu only expedients. Something much more drastic is required. Mr. Elder suggests that the British^ Government should be urged to enforce Immediately the recommendation of Mr. Bridgeman's interdepartmental eom_vttittee on meat supplies for 1919, and grant licenses to all meat importers. it would be possible to control here and prevent a continuance of the dumping of foreign meat, which is a serious menace to British -producers, not only here but throughout the Empire. |
