The Stratford Post reports that the [death occurred on Friday of Mrs. • [Goodwin, relict of the late Mr. Charles Goodwin. Mr. and"Mrs. Goodwin were".' the first settlers at Tuna, taking .up ' farming there about twenty-eight years ago. Mr. Goodwin died about three years ago, since when Mrs. Goodwin i had resided in Stratford. Bourke will retire on the 28rd of the present month (says the Chronicle). Senior Sergeant Bourke arrived m New Zealand in October, 1877, and joined the police force at Wellington on -November Bof that year. He was soon transferred to Christchurch, thence to Txmaru, where he did duty tor a year. He was next stationed for six years at Temuka. In turn he served 18 months at Rakaia, four years at Methven, and two years at Kaiapoi. .From Kaiapoi -he.returned.to Temuka, and was stationed there for five years m charge of that sub-district. On January 1, 1898, he was promoted to the^rank of sergeant, and transferred to Christchurch. In the following November he took charge at Sydenham, where he remained until 1907, when he was transferred to Wanganui, receiving some years later the rank of senior sergeant. In his retirement feenior Sergeant Bourke will have the best wishes of a very wide circle of friends. He was faithful in the discharge of his official duties, but he never failed to show a kindliness of heart and sympathy.; which was greatly appreciated, as. likewise were his' many acts of a charitable nature. \ Senior Sergeant Bourke intends to remain in Wanganui, and has purchased a property at Upper Aramoho. j
