The Town Hall flew no flags for Mr. Hughes' welcome, so a party of soldiers hoisted a Union Jack on the main flagpole. Mr. Hughes, commenting .on tho Lord Mayor (Mr. Lambert's) action on the occasion of Mr. Storey's doath, «aid that the Union Jack was condemned only by those who were enemies of the Empire. Mr. Lambert's action would be condemned by the overwhelming majority of Australian people. -Mr. Lambert, who was present at the Brisbane Labour Conference, sent word to Sydney explaining that the Australian flag was given the foremost position iii accordance with the requirements .of the Commonwealth Constitution. So lar as he was concerned, dt would always take precedence over other flags.
