LADIES' BALL

Tho i>lain and fancy dress ball heldl recently by the ladies was, without! doubt, the most successful of its kind held here for some time, the hall being altogether too small for the large crowd present. The "committee spared no effort to ensure the success of the function, and the arrangements made for the enjoyment of all were very creditable to the ladies, who are to be com-, piimentod on the splendid success of their efforts. The docoration* were nicely arranged, the interior of the hall being entirely transformed,. An. enjoyable programme of music was provided by Foster Bros., extras being playod by Mrs. W. Seed, Mrs. J. Green, j and MisH Harrison. The duties of M'sC. were ably carried out by Mesdames Bloor, Petty, Calder,. and Miss JM. Brown. A feature of the evening was tho number of fancy dresses worn. Many countries and personages wore represented, us well as some very good "originals." In the competition for tho best artistic dress Miss W. Perry (Eastern Dancer) was awarded first prize for ladies, and Mr. Nicholas (Father Christmas) secured first for gentlemen. For the best humorous dress Miss Lawson (Baggy Breeches) received the ladies' prize, and Mr. Les. Jurd (Swagger) the gentlemen's. Others in fancy dress were Mrs. Petty (Italian Dancer), Mrs. Calder (Normandy Peasant).. Mrs. N. Luxton (Hed Cross Nurse), Mr. N. Luxton (Wounded boldier), Miss 1. Baldock (Folly), Mis* W. HaMAck (Fairy), Mr.H. Lambie (Cowboy), Miss Adlam (Butterfly;, Miss E- Allan (Belgians M-Ks N. Allan (Inaian Smiawj,, Mr. W. Hadwin (Schoolgirl), Miss I. Perry (Pierette), Mr. H Wright (Old English Gentlot""^,^-,^- Guy (Nigger). Mrs. L. Jurd (Black Cat). The judging in the competitions was done by Mesdames Young and McGlado, and Mr. Foster, of Hawera.
