TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 1921. TURUTURU-MOKAI.

i . ■, ■ . ' . - I To-morrow; it; is intended to hold a field day at Turuturu-Mokai, when the "Parks and Reserves Improvement Committee and the-Mayor will be present to gp into any proposals may be made for the development of the his- ( tdric spot. We are encouraged by the fact that there is much more general , interest being taken, in Turuturti-, Mokai to hope that the development oi | the splendid asset which lies so handy to Hawera will proceed more rapidly! than hitherto, and we believe that public opinion, which a few years ago seemed, to regard Turuturu-Mokai as being too far away, is changing and are beginning to realise its' possibilities. The reserve is about twenty minutes' walk from High ", Street, and when the new railway sta- • tioniis built there will be few people' who Swill* object to the distance. The' suitability of Turuturu-Mokai for de- j velo^ment, its .natural formation, and,' above ally its historic association have been referred to on several occasions in' previous articles, and those who have been Keen that progress should be| made, are now able, to look fprward with; hopefulness to tEe time, when the' reserve will be one of the mdst Beauti- j ful spots in Taranaki.' A fair amount of work has been done with planting,! but a great deal more lias to be under- ( taken. If people, will go.out to the reserve to-morrow afternoon and the > various ideas and proposals are dis-' cussed on the spot and plans made, we feel sure that it will not be long before much greater interest is aroused in the work. We hope that sporting en-

thusiasts will mako a point oi being yroiOiiL ior tiio nmsi'oots of making a < iirst-cia.->a «>porti> ground arc eonsiueied' *, very ia.oiu.ujiu by tJiosu who have been i over tho rosor.'e. Tnero lia.i been some response to tho proi/osal that ft»o huudred poodle should gne JUi a year towards the parks and reserves to be divided equally between -King Edward Park and Turuturu-Mokai, but the list, of subscribers Las Btdl plenty oi room ior many moro names. It is not that our people do not appreciate their parks and reserves, but the need for their co-operating in tho work lias not been grapsed as wo hope it will be. Our townspeople, if they thought for a few minutes ot tho value oi their parks and how they are building for the generations to come, would respond most generously to the appeals of tho committee. People can help by setting aside a few ponce a week as their gut to the parks, or they may find when clearing up their gardens each year that they can give a few shrubs ior planting, or others may give seats to Turuturu-Mokai. Nobody nead seofc excuse on the ground that he would help if he only knew what to do. The members of the committee are always ready to supply information or discuss matters connected with- the parks and roserves. We hope that there will be a large gathering at Turuturu Mokai tomorrow afternoon, and that it will result in many more people joining with the commitTee in helping to beautify the'spot which, in a few yoars' time,' should become one of the most popular places in South Taranaki. If there is tho response by {.Tie public that -there should be there should bo no difficulty whatever in making Hawora's parks and reserves very beautiful and attractive. All that are necessary are generous co-operation and well considered nroDosals. with a steady income nade

lup of small annual contributions by a I large number of subscribers.
