Sir T. W. Smartt (Public Works Commissioner in South Africa) has-an-nounced that a substantial Union loan would be floated shortly to alleviate distress. Thus far the War Office has distributed 348,000 1914 Stars, 1,430,000 1914-15 Stars, 2,847,000 British War. Medals, and 2,394,000 Victory Medals. The newly-formed New South Wales branch of the Royal Colonial Institute will be housed in a fine siy-storey building in Bngh, presented and furnished by Mr Hugh Denison. of Adelaide. - The. 115 days' race between the French barques Edmond Rostand and Marechal de Turennes from Geelong has ended.^ The former, leaving a day , ahead, arrived at Queenstown one hour ahead of the latter. The vessels did not sight each other during the whole way.
