While Parliament was- sitting, Mr. "Hughes addressed a hundred members by (; invitation of the Empire Parliamentary Committee of Westminster on the Pacific question. He set out the <;ase from an Australian viewpoint, and -also discussed the situation as affecting America, China, and Japan and "their relation to Australia. He dealt with all points fully, expressing very great regret that the American Government had been unable to arrange to Iliold a preliminary conference and discuss Pacific matters, because without » settlement of these points disarmament was impossible. He explained the ■"White r Australia'' policy, tracing the -■develpoment of sentiment and emphasising the. strong claim now held as ;a national ideal.
