"THE STOCK EXCUSE FOR ALL
TROUBLES."
(To tte Editor.)
~• Sir, —Might I take this opportunity} of suggesting to the legal fraternity that it is time they found a new," smd possibly more truthful-excuse for the petty crimes they are asked to defend in the courts. Only last Tuesday. a-. person was charged with issuing valued less cheques, and apparently, without... taking the trouble to find out, the same old excuse and plea was put in that theaction was committed "while under theinfluence of liquor." 1 desire to take^ this opportunity of contradicting thi&on behalf of the "trade" I represent,, as such was not the case, for upon enquiry from the two persons to whom the cheques were issued they were both emphatic in their statement that at the* time the person referred to was not under the influence of drink. No doubt, Sir, this excuse was used in all goo* faith, hut unfortunately a matter o* this kind refers to a body arid not to an individual, and the sufferers haveno redress. The surprising part is that the "trade" have not taken exceptions to this in the past, for it gets the-, blame for a. lot of things for which it. is not "responsible.—-Yours, etc.,
