NO SIGN OF CANASTOTA
(BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS AfIPOCIATTON '* AUCKLAND, July 5. The Maheno f oundv no trace of the Canastdta, though she went •to the northward of her usual course in search. The officers held out no hope that the vessel is stiH afloat. A patch of discoloured water, which was thought might be due to oil, was sighted,, but close examination revealed no trace of naphtha and it was believed to be due to masses of rainwater lying on top of salt.
On Saturday a violent gale from the north struck the vessel amidships and she shipped many seas, everything having to be battened down. At midnight a huge sea smashed aboard broadside on to th"c teak railing on the navigation bridge, forty feet above the"*water level, bending the iron stanchions. The gale "moderated on Sunday.
