SATURDAY, JULY 2, 1921. TARANAKI'S PROSPERITY.

There has in the past been a very j marked loyalty among the people of .Taranaki" for their district, and no i doubt their keenness to do their 'best tor this very fertile agricultural part of the Dominion has helped very greatly., the magnificent progress which has been made. The boom conditions o* the pagt few years have perhaps made it easier to foe loyal to the district ( which has shared so greatly the general prosperity of the. Dominion. To a small extent the district is feeling the depression which recently came over the country, but.it is a fact that Tara-; naki is still by far the most prosperous part of New Zealand, and visitors from other districts say without hesitation that they are surprised at the general -buoyancy of the province. The produce of Taranaki is still maintaining fair values in the English markets, and we do not think that there ■will be any> serious reduction on pre-sent-prices. If the markets remain steady, and indications are that they will, then we may expect a renewed, flow of money into this province when ! the new season's shipments go forward. Our readers have no doubt noticed that other provinces feeling the depression much more severely than the people of Taranaki are doing their utmost to attract capital to their large trading concerns. With an offer of eight per cent, interest they are tempting those -with money to invest" to subscribe to itheir loans. We learn that recently a - considerable amount of money has gone from Taranaki for investment in other parts of the country. This is' probably due to the - abBence of any local opportunity for investment, and there is a prospect that several other loans will be floated in other districts in the near future. The I sending out of Taranaki of large sums ; of money cannot be regarded without some doubt as to the wisdom of such a move, and we are very glad to see that the Farmers' Co-operative Organisation Society has made an opening foi investors which should be heartily wel- . corned. The Society is asking the peo- ' pl-3 of Taranaki to subscribe £50,00 C at eight per cent., and we have nc hesitation in saying that those whc [place their money in the Society's hands will be making a very sound investment. •- The Society is in a thoroughly safe financial condition, and I the security which it offers is more ■' than, ample for requirements. The Society in making its offer to those with ' money to invest is looking well to the future of Taranaki, and its. aim is to place its organisation in, the best possible position to help the great dairying industry to develop and progress. The Society lias done good -work in the past, and it will, we feel sure, continue to be a very important provincial institution. Tha£ it is in a sound condition with very valuable assets and has the security and guarantee of many of the ibest known men of the province •behind it is a cause for great satisfaction, and investors, we are confident, will feel the more inclined to deposit their money "because they know that wiiiE men of the very highest integrity behind it .the Society is offering them a first rate investment. We have no hesitation whatever in recommending the Society's offer, and we hope that, instead of sending money away for investment in other less prosperous provinces, people will recognise their duty ; to keep Taranaki as strong ayS possible financially so that when the opportunity for progress and development offers money will be forthcoming through the Society which owes its existence to the dairying industry nnd can be of great assistance to the industry.
