TARIFF BILL.

PAPER DUTIES POSTPONED

MELBOURNE, July 1. In the House of Representatives, on the Tariff Bill, there was a lengthy debate regarding the duties on cinematograph films. An amendment was carried against the Government, by which duties on other than educational and home films were increased from one penny and three halfpence to one penny and threepence per lineal, foot.

The Minister for Customs secured the postponement of paper duties. MX Anstey protested, and said the postponement was for the purpose of allowing the newspaper proprietors: to make up their minds what they wanted. He favoured a heavy tariff against imported newsprint in order to promote the production of Australian paper.
