NEW ZEALAND BUTTER

PRESERVING ITS IDENTITY

The president of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce (Mr M. A. Carr) referred v recent meeting to the statement of a Southland farmer who had recently returned from Home, and had. Teported that not once in his travels from one end of the kingdom to th« other had he seen New Zealand dairy produce advertised. On such evidence the South Island Dairy Association had decided to advertise up to a given amount per year. Mr Carr drew attention to the ract that the Government was alive to the need of advertising, and had appointed an expert to do the work, who was now in England. He suggested that instead of this or that association each doing its little bit of advertising on its own, they should all join with. the Government and ask for a subsidy so that the very best results could be

obtained. •.,,,-. Mr A. Longuet said that it was a good thing, in the main, to advertise, but it was just as well that they should know the true position. In "most cases a dealer in butter at Home - had his own proprietary brand, and on bujing butter he put it up in pats in Jus own wrapper. He did not really care where the butter came from as long as it was of good quality, and he was not going to label it as being from New Zealand any more than lie would - call it Danish. To advertise the butter was all right, but it lost its identity between the retailer and the consumer. The president said that if the butter v:ere well advertised the retailer might be glad eventually to announce it as of New Zealand origin^ The secretary is to write to the

South. Island Dairy Association suggesting the pooling of advertising funds in the manner above proposed.
