THE SEMI-FINAL MATCH

BY CABLE—PBESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT

LONDON, June 10. Kirkwood beat Renouf by three up and two to play in the semi-final. Kirkwood made a great triumph in reaching the final, in which he will oppose the long-hitting Abe Mitchell, who defeated Ockenden 6 up and 5 to play.

Playing in. the semi-final with Renouf, Kirkwood gained a lead of three holes in the first round, but though he putted brilliantly, holing from two yards for a hole at the fifth, a fifteen yarder at the tenth j and a twenty yarder at the eighteenth, ~he took three putts on three greens and lost each, so he was brought back to one up. Perhaps this was because he played a little too easily, but nevertheless he played with supreme confidence and won three and two, interest being sustained to "the last stroke, when Kirkwood was accorded an ovation. His opponent played well throughout. Kirkwood opened the afternoon round by losing the first two holes. He regained one on the next and halved the fourth. Then he lost the fifth, taking three putts. Halves followed. Eenouf won the ninth with a brilliant three, and the match was square. Renouf made his only serious mistake at tie tenth, where he picked up. Kirkwood reached the green in two. At the eleventh Kirkwood ""holed a difficult putt for a half in three. He took three putts at the next, and only halved. He won the thirteenth with a^good four. Renouf, holing from thirteen yards for four, reduced Kirkwood's lead by one, with four to play. Kirkwood won the next, but an impossible stigmie at the sixteenth prevented him from holing. The seventeenth Kirkwood played perfectly. Though he was not go brilliant as in the second round he had the match safe throughout.
