'• (From Our Own Correspondent.) H QUEEN CARNIVAL. A very successful social was held in Town Hall, on Monday evening in of the farmers' candidate in the contest. This is the first social locally by the farmers' commitand, judging by the popularity of event, it should, not be the last. H | At a meeting of delegates representthe various committees interested, on Thursday evening, it was dethat the refreshment booth during carnival be run by a- committee inof the candidates. H RACING COMMISSION. _ The members of the Racing Commispaid a visit to the local course on and were met by delegates of Opunake Racing Club. Evidence support of the club's application for t^o days meeting was placed, before commission, who expressed themas pleased with the course and H ; SCHOOL AFFAIRS." ; Some, dissatisfaction is being exat the school committee's exof moneys raised at a bazaar months ago. A public meeting of was held in the Town Hall on afterncon. After some disMesdames Winstaniey and were appointed delegates to wait the committee to ascertain how money had been spent. HYDRO-ELECTRICITY. As the i-esult of representations to Mr. Bivks, Government elecengineer, on the occasion of his visit to Opunake, word was rereceived that pei-mission had granted to form a pov/er board to develop the resources of the Waiau river. It is proposed that the power "board when formed shall develop the decided upon by the Town Board, and for which they have raised loan of £7000. To adapt the scheme i the requirements of the suggested board will cost considerably more the money raised by the Town | but the preliminary, work should greatly minimised by-* what has albeen done.
