He would like,. betore the meeting closed, for the , committee to discuss ways-and means ot getting that sum. It was not "a V large sum, and the difficulty would be got over. The chairman paid a very high tribute to Mr J. F. Stevenson, who had done splendid work on the Taranaki Provincial War Relief Association as their delegate. He had spared no time or inconvenience to be always at the meetings when held, and had done his utmost for the returned soldiers as a member of that body. .It was resolved, on 'the motion of Messrs A. G. Bennett and McPhillips, that a hearty vote of thanks be accorded to Mr Stevenson. In reply, Mr Stevenson gave a *ood report of the Taranaki War Relief Association s work, • whickr-ijcas very extensive, and was appreciate by all pres- ? xiT^ c ™anked tfle previous speakers tor their kind remarks and all present tor their hearty vote of thanks. Ihe chairman stated that the Patriotic Society had met the members ot the Manaia Town Board in reference to where the monument would be placed in the Octagon. The Board had met since, and he had received the following reply: That the monument ' be placed north and south instead of east and west. The Patriotic Committee were unanimous that the monu- - ment should be east and west. Several of the members spoke against the monument being placed as stated oy the Board, which they considered ■was dangerous to traffic. It was moved by Mr Bennett that this meeting respectfully ask the Board to reconsider their decision and fall in line with the wishes of the Patriotic bociety, and also ask the members of the Manaia Town Board to meet the committee of the Patriotic Society on Monday night to come to a satisfactory agreement re the site. Seconded by Mr T. A. Bridge and carried: Election o? committee for the ensuing year: It was resolved that the some committee in power be re-elected - with the addition of Messrs H. Sutton, F. The chairman thanked all the committee for their valuable assistance to the society during their term of office; also the secretary, treasurer, and auditor for the good work they have done.

. A committee meeting was held afterwards, when Mr T. MoPhillips v,-as reelected chairman. Mr McPhillips asked to be relieved of the position- for the year, but the committee prevailed on him to accept the position, saying that Mr McPhillins had done excellent work for the good of the society. He had not spared himself to help along the institution since its inception, and hrd worked hard. Mr J. G. Craig w.:s elected vice-chairman.

The matter of a scheme to get the balance of the money for the monument was left in the hands of the eomm'ttee to meet next Friday night, May 13, and the ladies of the Red Cross Committee are to be asked to attend.

The fifth annual meeting of the Manaia branch was held on Saturday night m the Council Chambers There was a good attendance, over which Mr Pj. \y. Betts presided.
