OATH OF ALLEGIANCE
A MATTER OF CONSCIENCE
BY CABLE—PEESS ASSOCIATION-jCOPYRIGHT SYDNEY, May 9. E. J. Newton, of Dunedin, who refused, to .take the oath in New Zealand on arrival from Sydney, and who was returned to Sydney 'by the Riveriria, has arrived and has (been detained by \the Customs authorities on the Riverina.
When • Newton arrived in Auckland by itihe Riverina from Sydney he refused to take the oath of allegiance under the Immigration Restriction Act of 1920, contending it had (been introduced during his absence from New Zealand. He denies that he is disloyal, but states his conscience will not permit him to take the oath when 'he is a New Zealander.
