TOWN BOARD MEETING. The ordinary monthly meeting was held on Thursday night. Present: Messrs J. G.n Craig (chair), Meldon, Nielson, Christie, Innes, and Edwards. Correspondence. Correspondence was received from Hawera Hospital Board, stating that the levy this year would be £5 17s. From ,the Progress League, asking permission to. allow a copy of a petition praying for the formation of a power board to be taken charge of by the clerk in order' that- ratepayers may- sign or otherwise assist. —Received. The custodian of the Domain reported that the Golf Club had cut down fonr trees in the Domain ground, -rlt was decided t» ask the custodian for details. From Cement Pipe Co., stating that the cost of pipes manufactured at Masterton would be subject t« additional cost of railage from Masterton.j—Decided to make further enquiries from ;fcne company. From the Hockey Club, asking for use of same piece of ground* as last year. —Permission granted. The Monument. The chairman said the Board would need to grant the Patriotic Committee permission to erect the monument and rotunda in the Octagon. There were two positions suggested—<>rie to extend the memorials along Main street, and the other along Tauhuri street. He thought along Main street would be safer. , , Mr Christie said it would be a waste o{ material to place the two monuments iand v rotunda as suggested. The monuments should be placed north and south, and allow the Main street traffio to go between,1 the rotunda being in the centre. _ The chairman said he always thought the memorials should be in the Domain. Mr Edwards agreei, but said as the country i people had subscribed - they should have a. say hr the matter. He thought the monuments should be placed east and west. > \ . Mr Christie said the money had been subscribed, and it must be considered settled that the memorials would be placed in the Octagon, and it was a pity they were not unanimous as to the pos - tion. Mr Innes agreed with Mr Christie's suggestion. , Mr Nielson said there would be two 50ft passageways between the memorials. The chairman sad there would be three obstructions on the street, and if the lights went out accidents may occur. Mr Christie sa:d there had never been any accidents, and there were a monument and a post there now. The chairman moved, and Mr Edwards seconded, that the monuments be placed east and !west. The motion was lost, the chairman and Mr "Edwards voting for, and Messrs Christie, Me!don, Nielson and Innes against. - Mr Christie moved that the monuments be placed north and south, the exact position to be fixed by the Town Board —Seconded by Mr Meldon and carried. j General.
