AUCKLAND, May 6. j A deputation compns:jug a .number <of unemployed, Mr Parry, M.P., Mr i O'Neill (secretary of' the La- j bourers' Union), and'Mr Williams (New Zealand Workers' Union), waited on the ■ district engineer of the Public Works Department this morning with a request that immediate relief be given for men out of work in the form of (either \wm;k, or monetary assistance: V • C■ | * A special plea was made oil behalf 'of ten men without 'homes who "are sleeping out, and also married men who are paying rents for furnished rooms. One case was cited of a married., "man and his1 wife paying 24s for a fui^-! tiished room. ":\ i, {The engineer intimated that'the de- ' ;partment v«as moving in the'matter.. He i&kpressed surprise at the condiiioms revealed and promised to confer with, Mr Lightfoot, 'head of the local branch, of -the Labour Department. As the outcome, Mr Lightfoot promised that homeless men would ibe placed on public works jobs to-morrow morning and other matters would receive immediate attention.
