SPORTING

NOTES AND COMMENTS.

(By Maecenas.)

- Seasprite pulled up very lame after a gallop on the Egmont course yesterday, and on appearances she will not trouble the racecourse much longer.^ Kareao is under offer to a Taranaki owner, and the son of Maniapoto will possibly run in this gentleman's interest in future.

In all probability Seasprite will be retired from the race track immediately, as her owner intends sending the daughter of Hallowmas to the English sire Hay Comet this coming spring. A number of horses from this district were shipped north during the week, their mission being the -Pakurapga Hunt Club's gathering, which eventuates next week. Many of these hunters will be competing at the Eg-mont-Wanganui meeting on May 25. Just at present there is a shortage ot capable horsemen in the Dominion. With Gray on his way to England, Deeley, Ryder, R. Reed and L Manson under suspension, owners of horses weighted m the vicinity of 8.0 are experiencing trouble in securing capable riders.

Horseowners are reminded that nominations for the Egmont-Wanganui Hunt Club meeting close with the secretary at Waverley at 8 o'clock tonight. Our huntsmen usually hold their gathering on the Waverley racecourse, but as rebuilding is going on there just now a change to/ the Egmont Club's course was decided on. P 11* no doubt will be advantageous to both the club concerned and the general public. When one considers the disadvantages hunt clubs in these parts work under sportsmen will appreciate the effort of the club under review to provide good sport, and it behoves all owners to give the club's finances a rise by nominating freely. The prize money is very fair, and as speculation will be br«k a good sum can be won by an owner. At the 1919 meeting £10,339 was invested on the totalisator, but I will be muck surprised should the club not double these figures at the meeting set down for the 25th of this mon-th.
