FARMERS' UNION

HAWERA BRANCH

A meeting of the Hawera branch of the Farmers' Union was held in the secretary's Office on Saturday. Present: Messrs F. Mills (in the chair), A. Oliver, A. R. B. Pierce, F. Ga*with,,H. Finlay, A. Haseltine, B. Haseltine, D. Soot-ty and H.. Batten. d,. Messrs J. W. Deem and A. J. Glasson wrote expressing their thanks for ters of appreciation from the branch; The president reported upon the visit of members of the branch to various farms in the district in respect to lucerne crops, there being nearly 50 farmers present at the inspection.- He also reported that Mr. Glasson had paid a visit of inspection to,the boys' and girls' club plots-at^Tokaora (both nfengolds and swedes), and stated that the results obtained!so far were somewhat disappointing. With regard to the root-crop competL tion, the secretary stated that so far he had only received four entries. These were from Messrs A:.Oliver,, A. Haseltine, B. Finlay,' and E. George. It was resolved, on the motion of Mr. Pierce, that the entrance fee be fixed at 10s per entry. „« It was decided that'-'the date for receiving entries be extended to next meeting day, and that in the meantime members endeavour to. secure entries.

The chairman notified that there was to be a "farmers' day" at the Manaia Demonstration' Farm on February 25, and recommended members to attend, if possible. ■■-.•-

Mr. A. Haseltine-undertook to open the subject for discussion at the next meeting. ■ ■ The chairman stated that he had been asked if it would be possible to get the Hawera Star to publish, regularly, the- calendar of operations that should be-undertaken each month on a. dairy farm. He had mentioned the matter.'to the Hawera Star and to the officers of the Agricultural Department, and had hopes of the calendar being published very shortly. , The question of the delay in the shipment ,of cheese was brought up, aiid the following.resolution,, moved by Mr. Mills and seconded by Mr. Pierce, was carried: "That while expressing our appreciation of the Prime Minister's past efforts in endeavouring to provide shipping for the export of produce to the Home markets? in view of" the present accumulation of cheese in New Zealand and the possibility of delay in shipping causing serious loss to the cheese producers, the Prime Minister be requested to aagin use his utmost endeavours with the shipping committee to provide more space for | cheese shipment at the earliest date."

Mr. A. Haseltine moved the motion .standing in his name, namely, (that the monthly meeting to be held on the first Thursday in each month at 11 a.m., instead of Saturday, as at present. The motion; was seconded by Mr. Batten, and, after a full discussion, it was decided that the matter- be held. Over until after the annual meeting.

The following new members were elected: Messrs T. H. Burton and C H. Peacock (Main South. Road).
