HONE SERVICE MEN

CANNOT RECEIVE WAR. MEDAL.

(BY TELEGtMfW —*pesP ASROOTATrowr %

WELLINGTON, Feb. 12. The Minister of Defence, in reply to a letter from Mr. E. Newsman, M.P., acknowledges all the valuable services rendered by home service men, but says it is impossible, under the rules formulated by the Imperial authorities, to order the issue of war medals. There must have been actual passage c^erseas to qualify for a war medal. The Government, however.' is consMering the award of a commemorative medal, and has cabled to the United Kingdom for estimates. If this proposal is adopted it should meet the case of men who rendered effective service in New Zealand.
