ColUs./one of N&w Ply- • mouth's most respected and useful pub lie men (reports'the News), His health had for some time been failing, for which reason he was unable a week or j two ago to accept the position or" Mayor offered him by his fellow councillors on the tragic death of the Mayor (Mr.' J.Clarke).- The late Mr. Collis was born in Fiji in 1853. He arrived at Auckland at an early age, and was educated at Wesley College. The family settled m New Plymouth in 1872, and Williami was brought up as a photographer, com- ! mencing business on his own account in i 1875. He was elected to the Boroughr ! Council in 1880, and had been a member ! practically up till a week or two ago«. ■ The late Mr. Collis was imbued with ! the true civic spirit, gave to the community ungrudgingly, of his time - and talent. Mr. Collis was married in i 1877 to a daughter of the late Mr. W. i R. King, of New Plymouth, and had four daughters and two sons. The : daughters are. Mrs. J. W. Ryan (Auckland), Mrs. J-. Gray (Napier), Mrs. A. C. Lawrey, and Miss K. Collis (NewPlymouth), and the son Mr. S. "vT. Collis r (Auckland). Rifleman Douglas Collis was killed on the Somme in 1916. Mrs. Collis also survives him.
