JAPAN AND THE MANDATES

HER OPPOSITION WITHDRAWN

REASONS FOR HER CHANGE OF ATTITUDE. ——— * (Received Dec. T5, 9 a.m.) GENEVA, Dec. 14. The Australian Press Association's Geneva correspondent says: My enquiries in Japanese circles lead to the belief that without forgoing their claims to racial equality the Japanese have withdrawn their opposition to the issue of the mandates as previously drafted. The dominating factors in the | withdrawal of Japanese obstruction to { the mandates will be found in their desire to secure a renewal of the Anglo-Japanese Alliance on most favourable terms, coupled with Wellington Kqo's pronouncement over Chinese feeling in regard to Shantung. The Japanese do not wish to have the latter subject discussed at present by the Assembly, thus attracting overmuch attention to her attitude towards China.
