The late: Hon.. J. A. Tole,. Crovrn Prosecutor at Auckland, was- bom ia Yorkshire of' Irish parents, who> brought him out. to. New Zealand at an early age. He- was educated, at St. John's College, Auckland, dnd at, Sydaey, where he matriculated in 1865. Three, years later he graduated B.A. at the Sydney University, and entered the legal profession, being admitted to the 'New Sbuth Wales Bar in 1871, aad to the New, Zealand Bar in the following year. He entered public affairs, and after serving on various local bodies was elected in 1875 to the House of j Representatives as member for Eden. In 1884 he entered the Stout-Vogel Ministry as Minister of Justice, an &p----pointment which he held till 1887, when he was defeated at the general I elections. In 1893 he was appointed Crown Prosecutor at Auckland, a posi- ! tion which he has held ever since. • He was also latterly a member of the New Zealand University College Council, Governor of the Auckland Grammar. School, and a trustee of the. Jubilee Institute for the Blind. He was appointed a K.C. in 1907.
