SCHOOL COMMITTEE

The monthly meeting of the Eltham School Committee was held last even-! ing. Present: Messrs 1. J. Bridger (chairman), A. R. Gow^r, J. Gower, J. Taylor, W. H. Hunter, Rev. J. A. Hosking, and J. H. Sheat (secretary). Mr J. Crawford applied for leave of absence from this and the next two succeeding meetings, and an apology was received .from "Rev. J. G. Castle. Leave was granted in each case. A letter was received from the Board reporting that Miss L. Finnerty had been appointed to the position of infant mistress. There were three otherapplicants. The chairman brought up the matter of school prizes, which had been discussed two meetings previously. He had come to the conclusion that it would be of greater benefit to the school if the money were diverted to the purchase of playground apparatus. After some discussion is was decided to rescind the. previous motion and to expend the money as. suggested, the secretary to obtain particulars of various pieces of gymnastic apparatus. It was decided to proceed in the meantime with the erection of a second horizontal ladder.

The chairman further reported that the Rev. Hosking and himself, together with Mr O. Hawken, M.P., had duly waited upon the Board with regard to the proposed new school, and had bee.n sympathetically heard. He hoped that the Eltham school would be placed well up.on the list of new works to be entered upon.

The matter of the new school site was mentioned, and the chairman reported that it was intended to spend £25 during the year in planting the boundaries. The agricultural instructor had suoervised the planting at the school" of 2500 eleagnus cuttings, which would be ready for hedging -next season. The headmaster attended later in the evening, and reported that work was progressing satisfactorily at the school, but that there had been a slight outbreak of skin trouble among some of the children. It was not, howap/w, .^assuming serious proportions, .bjS'*-4yas responding to a me.thod of treatment recommended by Dr Gunn. The pupil teachers and probationers are at present having their yearly course of "criticism lessons" in Hawera. Accounts amounting to £19 12s Id were passed for payment.
