Mr E. J. Leydon, formerly of Palmerston North and Auckland, has come. , to Hawera to take up the position of auctioneer for the firm of H. Lee and Co., successors to J. G. Osborne and Co, Mr Leydon has had wide experience in this work. As a sequel to the recent proceed- '• ings at Wanganui befqre the Chef . Justice, in which Mr G. .V. Pearce figured prominently (the New Zea- * land Times reports), Mr M. Myers applied to and obtained from Mr Justice Edwards an order prohib'ting the removal from the jurisdiction of the Court of the youngest daughter of the defendant, th© custody of whom the Chief Justice had ordered to be given '** to the mother. An unusual incident occurred in the Hamilton Supreme Xkmrt when the , jury was being empanelled. When ' handed the Bible, a juryman said he objected t« swear, and when Mr Jus- \ tice Cooper asked why, he said: "Because the Word of God forbids me." The Judge said the juryman could make an affirmation. The man, re- . plied that the Bible told him not to i swear, "neither by earth nor by heaven." Thereupon his Honor said the man was not fit to be a juryman!, and excused him from service. It is said the juror, with a suggestive wink to the Crown Prosecutor, hurried : from the Court. The priest of Villeneuvre St. Georges, near Paris, is much concern- ■'- ed at the scantiness of attire affected -by French brides. In his parish he writes: "I quite undert stand the difficulties attaching to the :'high cost of living, and especially the in the price of clothing ma.terial. I sympathise keenly with girls * who can; only afford enough material for half a dress, leaving a low neck and bare arms. I have therefore _bought a perfectly good white woollen •'shawl. It will be at the disposal of -all lightly dressed brides during the ceremony in my church, -which is very cold." - The Kaponga School Committee are . psomoting a grand social in the Town Hall on June 17 in aid of the school fuHds. The arrangements are of the West, aha such a worthy object should ■ be heartily supported. '. £* H. Lee and Co. draw attention to "be sale of freehold sections situated in Colhns and* Egmont streets,, also verandah residence containing 5 rooms, situated in Egmont street.
