HELP FOR EUROPE
RAISING FUNDS IN NEW ZEALAND.
The'-attitudes of the -Government towards collections or donation*, in aid ot tne rainine-stricken populations of Central Europe was denned by tne Minister of internal Affairs (Hon. G. J. Anderson; m an official statement. It being tne desire of the Government to assist all tnose who might bei charitably disposed in the. direction of providing ass„tance to distressed Europeans, said, the Alinister. he would notify by Gazette shortly that pursuant to the War Funds Act, while he could not authorise street collections, bazaars, sales, art unions, or the collection of money by any similar methods, it would be quite lawful for funds to be raised by a general appeal, by any person at a public meeting, from church congregations, or other assembly of persons, or for the person so appealing to receive such subscriptions. Provision would be made by the Government for the transmission by cable, through the High Commissioner for New Zealand, without cost, of all sums so raised, provided they were paid*to the nearest approved war fund for remittance ,to the Under-Secretary, Internal Affairs Department, Wellington, or were forwarded direct by the person representing the collective donors. Personal donations would be similarly remitted. With a view to preventing any inconvenience, all remittances could be made by payment to any branch of the Bank of New Zealand, to the credit of the Public Account, the deposit receipt to be forwarded, with notice of payment to the UnderSecretary, Internal Affairs Department, Wellington, when an official acknowledgment of the donation would be made.
