BONE BUTTONS: A CANINE DRAMA.

LONDON, ApriJ 26. A message from Constantinople states that the^ efforts of the Red Cross to ; find employment for 3000 Russian re- | fugees assembled on the island of Proti are now meeting with success. It will be remembered- that five years ago [ myriad packs *of wandering pariah dogs, from Constantinople were transported' to the barren island of Proti in order *° get rid of them from the capital. The bones of the tmfortunates were left to whiten undisturbed, but to-day they are rapidly being converted into buttons, carved on the crudest imaginable spindles, by the Russian refugees. The Turks refused to patronise the industry, as it violates one of the Moslem tenets—namely, kindness towards animals—but a brisk trade is developing wath the Greek, norts. of the Aegean.
