PREMIER'S EXPLANATION.

(BY TELEGRAPH —PEEBS ASSOCIATION.)'

WELLINGTON. Aug. 28. There has been a suggestion that, though there is a shortage of butter in various parts of New Zealand, fairly large quantities are held in store. Th« matter was mentioned to the Prime Minister to-day, when he mad©, the following official statement in reply:— "At the end of April there were 82,000 boxes in store, a quantitv far in excess of that usually required to meet the demands of the local market during the winter months; but the'quantity of butter manufactured since then has been only about one-third of that usually produced by factories during May, June, July and August, hence the shortage which could not be foreseen. It is expected, however, that ample supplies will be available for the. local market through the usual channels within the :*ext week or ten days, as practically the whole of the factories have now commenced operations for the season.''
