BRITISH OVERSEAS SETTLEMENT DEPARTMENT.

LONDON, August 27. An Overseas Settlement* Department has been established by the Imperial Government with a view to directing emigration of ex-sea-vice men to the Dominions rather than to foreign countries. Already the Department has received about 1200 applications. About 75 pei' cent, of the applicants desire to go to Canada, and the balance to Australia and New Zealand. Many of the latter made enquiries regarding facilities for fruit growing. The applicants for Australasia were referred to the respective agencies owing to the fact that no arrangements had yet been possible for sending them overseas until the Dominions are ready to receive them.
