EGMONT-WANGANUI HUNT CLUB

STEEPLECHASE MEETING

After a lapse of four years this club held its race meeting on the Waverley course yesterday. Taking into consideration the restricted means of travel, there was a good attendance. The racing throughout the day was fair. The course was not in good order, and more attention should be given to it before another meeting is held. Mr Alf. Morse, the starter, was in great form at the barrier, all the fields being got away without delay and in capital style. The secretary and other officials carried out their duties well. The Wanganui Pipe Band rendered a programme of music during the day. There were several spills in the jumping events, but fortunately none of the jockeys or horses were injured. During the preliminary before the last race Crystal Palace, ridden by 0. McCarten, and Egmont Park, ridden by Johns, collided. Egmont Park's jockey got a severe shaking up, and was unable to mount. After considerable delay another boy (Rutherford) was found. Meanwhile* owing to misunderstanding, the totalisator had refused to take investments on Egmont Park, and this caused considerable confusion and comment. The totalisator put through the sum of £10,339. The handsome cup donated by the Egmont Racing Club was presented to the owner of Stetson (Mr J. B. Gaisford) by Mr J. Gray, vice-president of the Egmont Racing Club. Details of the racing are as follows:
