ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
MINER KILLED BY A FALL OF CLAY.

DUNEDIN, Aug. 26. Robert William Smith, married, aged 53 years, residing at Brighton, employed in a local coal mine, was working to-day when a slab of clay from the roof struck him down against the hard coal, causing a deep gash on the left temple. He was apparently suffoctaed while unconscious. An inquest opened for identification and adjourned. The mine has been closed down meanwhile. About a dozen men have been employed * since the mine opened early this year. Deceased came from^, Canada five years ago, and went to Brighton in February. He was an experienced miner, and leaves a widow, tw To daughters, and a son not yet returned from the war.
