Whitehorn. As one of the conditions attaching to this shield was that the quartette holding it must belong to the society, it was necessary, seeing that these gentlemen were no longer'members, to adopt some method of again bringing the shield into competition. And the society decided to hold a quartette competition in this connection. This very interesting event took place on Monday evening, in the Methodist Schoolroom, when there was a large attendance of members and their friends. The judging was in the hands of the society's conductor, Mr W. McClellan, who had associated with him Mrs L. Tarrant. There were eight competing quartettes, and victory fell to Messrs Grace, Ackroyd, Cooper and Buckeridge, who scored 113 points out of a possible 150. In addition to the shield, the winners have the right to wear a small gold lyre, which is the gift of Mrs L. Grace, the society's accompanist. During the evening, Mrs Taylor, and Messrs Saxon Jones and Cate rendered instrumental trios, Messrs Ackroyd and Ireland songs, Mr Geo. H. Buckeridge a recitation, arid there were two other quartettes. At the conclusion of the programme the judge, in announcing the result, made some comments on the work of the quartettes, pointing out the various weaknesses, after which supper was handed round, and this with the singing of "Auld Lang Syne," brought to a close a most interesting and profitable evening's entertainment. It is to be hoped that this will be only the forerunner of similar gatherings.
