TOKAORA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) WELCOME TO RETURNED SOI*DIEKS. On Friday night a concert and dance was next in the local schoolroom, to welcome home some of our boys. Apologies were received from several, some being away on their New Zealand holidays, wime others were prevented through private ailairs and prior engagement!). i'ne concert part was pronounced first class, praise being liberally accorded the Hawera "contingent, which so freely gave their services. During the interval Mr H. E. Johneon called on Mr1 John i"inlay to present the gold medal £o Private 13. flazeltine. Tliii Mr Finlay did in an interesting speech, and congratulated the recipient on his safe return, the audience rising and singing" "For he's a jolly good fei~ low" with vei-ve. Mr T. C. Gormley was at the piano. At the conclusion of the concert part Mr .lohnson, as chairman, moved a hearty vote of thanks to those ladies and gentlemen who had so generously ass.sted with their talent to make the affair such a success. The singing of God Save the King brought this part to a conclusion. Supper was served round, tho room cleared, and dancing was kept up to the small hours of the morning. There was a large attendance, visitors coining from New Plymouth and intervening townsTnps. Mrs F. Mills played nearly all the dance music. "NOT DEAD YET." j In my last notea I mentioned that at a piior concert and dance held here, not a horse-drawn veMcle was present. A loy»»r of the noble animal took me kround on Friday evening to see the [ various vehicles. We found about an equal number of each, and as my enthusiastic friend remarked, "the horse 'is not dead yet." \ THE WEATHER. ' Mr H. Livingston informs me that the rainfall at Ohawe ,on Saturday night totalled 0.47 points, a very wel- - come.downpour while it lasted. For the ''whole of last May 1.88 points fell on • ten days. As an indication of oar mild j vveather so far, musSrooms are growing in fair numbers near the sea coast.
